Dear Parents, Carers and Families,

Welcome to our latest newsletter.

A fortnight of Celebration, Creativity and Community!

Our school has been a true hub of creativity and excitement these last 2 weeks as students and staff prepared for a number of special events. In the lead-up to these celebrations, classrooms across the school have been busy, noisy, and wonderfully vibrant, filled with colour, imagination, and exploration. Children have been sharing ideas, creating artwork, designing costumes, and exploring stories, with displays across the school showcasing their creativity and enthusiasm.

The week was marked by the celebration of World Book Day, where students enjoyed a range of activities focused on the joy of reading, storytelling, and imagination. Classrooms were full of character costumes, reading dens, book-themed learning, and engaging discussions about favourite stories and authors.

Alongside this, students also took part in celebrations for St Piran’s Day, embracing Cornish culture and traditions. Some of our students were proud to watch and enjoy the Penzance parade, representing the school and joining in the wider celebrations taking place in the community.

Of course, no St Piran’s Day celebration would be complete without some traditional Cornish treats! Across the school, students happily tucked into delicious cream teas, clotted cream, and Cornish pasties, which were thoroughly enjoyed and quickly devoured.

It has been a fantastic few days that truly captured the spirit of our school community—creative, joyful, and full of shared experiences. We are incredibly proud of our students for their enthusiasm and participation, and grateful to our staff for creating such rich and memorable opportunities for everyone involved.

Thank you!

Jodie

Olives Class:

Olive's Class have been enjoying lots of hands on learning over the past few weeks. We celebrated St Piran’s Day by making and tasting scones. Exploring,  measuring, mixing, and sampling as well as discovering new textures and smells.

Our weekly sessions at Penzance Gym Club have been a particular highlight. The children have been developing coordination, and strength while enjoying the trampoline, parachute, and sprung floor area. They are learning to anticipate movements, and interact with staff and peers, showing growing confidence, curiosity, and independence.

Juniper Class:

Juniper Class have been using their creativity this week as part of our celebrations for World Book Day. The students worked together to design and create their own reading den, transforming the classroom into a cosy space for enjoying books.

Once the den was complete, pupils had the opportunity to read either independently or with friends inside the space they had created. It was wonderful to see them so engaged in exploring a range of stories and sharing their love of reading.

Inspired by the books they discovered, the children also began writing some of their own stories. Their imagination and enthusiasm have been fantastic, and we are very proud of their creativity and teamwork throughout the week.

Aspen Class:

Students in Aspen class have been looking at the traditions and customs of CHINESE NEW YEAR. We have made our own fortune cookies and red envelopes, as well as learning about the Chinese new year race story and watching a dragon dance. Students researched the year they were born and what animal they were. We have explored our senses and have had a little celebration at the end of the topic by trying some delicious Chinese foods. What a fabulous topic!

Dave's Marathon Fundraiser!

In March 2026, students from our upper site (Aspen and Oaks) will be going on a residential trip to Bristol which will be filled with activities such as a Banksy walking tour and a trip to Bristol Aerospace, among many other fun things to do.

To raise money and to give these wonderful students a great time in a more affordable way, Dave ran 874 laps around our upper-site playground, which equates to a marathon distance.

We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dave on successfully completing this challenge!

Your dedication, perseverance, and hard work have truly paid off. Taking on a challenge like this requires commitment and determination, and you’ve demonstrated both every step of the way.

Thank you, Dave, for your efforts and for setting such a positive example.

If your child is absent from school without authorisation, you will be committing an offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £80 if paid within 21 days or £160 if paid after this but within 28 days.

If your child is further absent from school without authorisation within any 3-year period, you will be committing a further offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices for a second offence are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £160, payable within 28 days.

Importantly, fines per parent will be capped to two fines within any three-year period. Once this limit has been reached, other action such as a parenting order or prosecution will be considered.

Failure to pay the Penalty Notice may also result in legal action. If you are prosecuted and attend court because your child has not been attending school, you could get a fine of up to £2,500. Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court, including legal costs.

Absence not authorised by the school may also result in a prosecution in the Magistrates’ Court under Section 444(1) or Section 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996, leading to a fine of up to £2,500 and/or a custodial sentence. Again, Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court, including legal costs.

Money raised from fines is only used by the local authority to cover the costs of administering the system, and to fund attendance support. Any extra money is returned to the government.
