Dear Parents, Carers and Families,

Welcome to the Summer Term

What a wonderful start we have had to the Summer Term! School has been full of noise, fun, colour and excitement as pupils have returned ready for a busy and engaging half-term of learning.

Our EYFS classes have fully embraced their new topic, Roots and Shoots, exploring the world of plants and growth through hands-on experiences. Pupils have been busy planting and caring for sunflowers, tomatoes, cress and beans, carefully watering them and observing the changes each week as they begin to grow and flourish. It has been lovely to see such curiosity, care and enthusiasm for learning outdoors.

Music continues to fill our classrooms and corridors, with beautiful musical melodies shared during sessions with Sam and in music therapy. Pupils have been exploring sounds, rhythm and self-expression, creating joyful and calming experiences across the school.

Creativity has also been blooming in Art, where pupils have been inspired by Vincent van Gogh and his famous sunflower paintings. The school has been brightened by vibrant artwork full of texture, colour and individuality — a wonderful celebration of our pupils’ creativity.

In Science, classes have been enjoying exciting practical lessons exploring solids, liquids and gases, with lots of opportunities for investigation, prediction and discovery.

Alongside all the fantastic pupil learning, staff have also taken part in valuable professional development focused on cognition and memory, helping us continue to strengthen our understanding of how children learn best and further develop our practice across the school.

We are looking forward to an exciting Summer Term ahead, with many special events, learning opportunities and celebrations still to come.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Sycamore Class:

This half-term Sycamore class have been finding out about plants. We have planted sunflower and cress seeds and are looking after them and watching them grow. Some have big shoots already.

We painted our own sunflower pictures, like Vincent van Gogh, using thick oozy paint and lolly sticks.

We also looked at plants that we eat and had fun chopping up vegetables to make a salad. We then looked at the plants and flowers growing around the school. We have been very busy.

Willows Class:

Willow Class have explored states of matter in science by turning solid (ice) into liquid (water). We also used gas (steam from the hot water) to write our names! The children then used their fantastic recall skills to sequence the experiment in their weekly writing session.

If your child is absent from school without authorisation, you will be committing an offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £80 if paid within 21 days or £160 if paid after this but within 28 days.

If your child is further absent from school without authorisation within any 3-year period, you will be committing a further offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices for a second offence are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £160, payable within 28 days.

Importantly, fines per parent will be capped to two fines within any three-year period. Once this limit has been reached, other action such as a parenting order or prosecution will be considered.

Failure to pay the Penalty Notice may also result in legal action. If you are prosecuted and attend court because your child has not been attending school, you could get a fine of up to £2,500. Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court, including legal costs.

Absence not authorised by the school may also result in a prosecution in the Magistrates’ Court under Section 444(1) or Section 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996, leading to a fine of up to £2,500 and/or a custodial sentence. Again, Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court, including legal costs.

Money raised from fines is only used by the local authority to cover the costs of administering the system, and to fund attendance support. Any extra money is returned to the government.
