Dear Parents, Carers and Families,

As we head towards Summer Term Two, there is a real flurry of excitement around school as preparations are already underway for a very busy and exciting few weeks ahead. We are looking forward to Sports Day, Mazey Day, our Summer Fayre alongside Enterprise and activities week. There is certainly lots to look forward to!

There are many highlights this half-term as part of World of Work Week – Acorns had an exciting opportunity to explore different careers firsthand. A particular highlight was climbing aboard a fire engine and taking a look inside the back of an ambulance, sparking lots of curiosity and excitement. Both Palm and Juniper classes recently visited St Michael’s Mount sowing grass seeds on the dairy lawn after trees had been cleared following Storm Gorreti. Palm Class were incredibly fortunate to receive exclusive access to the beautiful gardens, where the children thoroughly enjoyed exploring this unique setting.

Congratulations to our students who successfully completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition, demonstrating incredible enthusiasm, teamwork and resilience throughout. Over the course of the expedition, students walked an impressive 18 miles across Porthleven, The Lizard and Tregonning Hill, overcoming challenging camping conditions and supporting one another every step of the way. The bronze walking challenge and camping will take place straight after half-term.

Another memorable experience was attending the recent Careers Fayre, where the children were fantastic ambassadors for the class. They engaged enthusiastically with a wide range of stalls, exploring future opportunities and careers. A particular favourite was the Radio Cornwall stall, where pupils were fascinated to learn more about broadcasting. Students also recently benefited from an inspiring careers Q&A and football training session led by Stewart Yetton, assistant manager of Truro City FC. The session provided a fantastic opportunity to gain insight into careers within football and sport, while also supporting exciting discussions about the potential launch of a disability football team at the club following conversations between the school and Truro City FC.

We are incredibly proud of all our students for their enthusiasm, determination and achievements this half-term and look forward to the many exciting events and opportunities still to come in Summer Term Two. We hope that you and your families have a wonderful half-term break, and we will see all pupils back on Monday 1st June.

Acorns Class:

Acorns have been learning all about growing and planting. We have planted seeds and flowers in our playground and have been looking after them and watering them. Also, we learnt all about recycling and used the litter pickers to sort into plastic, paper and cardboard. For World of Work week, we really enjoyed going on the fire engine and looking inside the back of the ambulance.

Juniper Class:

Juniper Class visited St Michael's Mount and had an absolutely wonderful time! We travelled by boat to and from the mount, sowed grass seeds on the dairy lawn after trees had been cleared by storm Gorreti and visited the gardens and battlements!

Juniper class have also been exploring position and direction in Maths and put their skills to the test on a 'driving test' style course on bikes!

Cedar Class:

This term Cedar class have been learning about food, where it comes from, how it's made and the importance of a healthy balanced diet. We have been busily preparing for our end of half term food festival, by decorating our classroom, practicing our music performances and taking a trip into the local community to buy food supplies for the festival!

Palm Class:

It has been a truly fantastic few weeks for Palm Class! We have been incredibly busy getting out into the community, developing our physical abilities, getting creative, and exploring future pathways.

Our recent trip to St Michael's Mount was a spectacular highlight. We were incredibly lucky to be granted exclusive access to their beautiful gardens. The children had a wonderful time exploring this special area, and as a very thoughtful gesture, we were gifted a piece of the trees that were sadly felled during the recent storms—a unique and meaningful keepsake of our visit.

Alongside our outings, we have been focusing heavily on developing our ball skills. To put this into practice, we have been enjoying some introductory golf. As you will see from the pictures, the children had great fun practising striking balls with their specially sized golf clubs!

Back in the classroom, we have been working hard on our fine motor skills and creative expression through a fantastic multi-stage art project. We began by shaping and moulding tin foil to understand 3D form and structure, before challenging ourselves to construct more complex sculptures using wire. The resulting pieces are incredibly expressive, and the children showed great resilience and concentration throughout the entire process.

We also had a superb time attending the recent Careers Fayre. The children were brilliant ambassadors for the class, engaging with a wide variety of stalls and exploring different opportunities. A definite favourite for Palm Class was the Radio Cornwall stall! The children were absolutely fascinated by the team and loved learning a bit more about the world of broadcasting.

Students successfully completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition, showing fantastic enthusiasm, teamwork and dedication throughout. Over the course of the expedition, students walked a total of 18 miles across Porthleven, The Lizard and Tregonning Hill, demonstrating resilience and determination every step of the way. Although the camping conditions were sometimes wild and challenging, the group came together brilliantly, supporting one another and maintaining a smashing attitude throughout the experience.

Football:

Students recently took part in an engaging careers Q&A session alongside a football training session led by Stewart Yetton, assistant manager of Truro City FC. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to benefit from Stewart’s experience and knowledge within the game. The visit also supported exciting discussions around the potential launch of a disability team at the club, following conversations with myself and the school.

If your child is absent from school without authorisation, you will be committing an offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £80 if paid within 21 days or £160 if paid after this but within 28 days.

If your child is further absent from school without authorisation within any 3-year period, you will be committing a further offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices for a second offence are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £160, payable within 28 days.

Importantly, fines per parent will be capped to two fines within any three-year period. Once this limit has been reached, other action such as a parenting order or prosecution will be considered.

Failure to pay the Penalty Notice may also result in legal action. If you are prosecuted and attend court because your child has not been attending school, you could get a fine of up to £2,500. Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court, including legal costs.

Absence not authorised by the school may also result in a prosecution in the Magistrates’ Court under Section 444(1) or Section 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996, leading to a fine of up to £2,500 and/or a custodial sentence. Again, Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court, including legal costs.

Money raised from fines is only used by the local authority to cover the costs of administering the system, and to fund attendance support. Any extra money is returned to the government.
