Dear Parents, Carers and Families,

What a wonderful couple of weeks we have had to start the term. Despite experiencing all four seasons in a single day at times, our pupils have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, resilience and lots of smiles. We have already enjoyed some fantastic adventures, including a whole-school trip to the zoo, an exciting camping experience at school, and local hikes as part of our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award programme. It has been fantastic to see our students developing their independence, confidence and teamwork skills while making lasting memories with their friends.

Across our primary classes, pupils have been enjoying their new topic, Happy, Healthy Me. Children have been exploring fruits and vegetables through sensory activities, using their senses to investigate different foods and learning about healthy choices. In Art, they have created wonderful self-portraits, celebrating what makes them unique, while in Science they have been carrying out investigative lessons exploring plants and discovering what they need to grow and thrive.

Alongside this, pupils have begun their exciting enterprise projects for the summer fete, using the Skills builder essential skills of: communication, problem solving, teamwork, adapting, planning and leadership to create exciting products linked to Cornwall to sell at the event.

This is always one of our busiest terms, with so many exciting activities planned. We look forward to sharing many more wonderful experiences and achievements with you over the coming weeks!

Olives Class:

As part of our topic Happy, Healthy Me, we have been busy exploring fruits and vegetables through sensory play, stories and role play. The children have enjoyed looking, touching and smelling different foods, as well as playing with our toy food, table and chairs to practice sharing, choosing and taking part in daily routines.

We have also been caring for our class baby doll, helping to feed, cuddle and look after the baby as part of learning about ourselves and others. Alongside this, we have enjoyed celebrating birthdays in class, sharing our favourite songs and playing with balloons!  We have created our own portraits by being drawn around on large paper on the floor and we have made our own fruit pictures using lots of tissue paper and sticky sellotape!

Newquay Zoo:

Many of our classes recently enjoyed an exciting trip to Newquay Zoo. It was a fantastic day filled with learning, exploration, and lots of fun as the children discovered a variety of animals from around the world.

The trip was a great success, and the children were a credit to the school throughout the day. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff who helped organise and support the visit. Their hard work and dedication made this wonderful experience possible for everyone involved.

If your child is absent from school without authorisation, you will be committing an offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £80 if paid within 21 days or £160 if paid after this but within 28 days.

If your child is further absent from school without authorisation within any 3-year period, you will be committing a further offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices for a second offence are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £160, payable within 28 days.

Importantly, fines per parent will be capped to two fines within any three-year period. Once this limit has been reached, other action such as a parenting order or prosecution will be considered.

Failure to pay the Penalty Notice may also result in legal action. If you are prosecuted and attend court because your child has not been attending school, you could get a fine of up to £2,500. Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court, including legal costs.

Absence not authorised by the school may also result in a prosecution in the Magistrates’ Court under Section 444(1) or Section 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996, leading to a fine of up to £2,500 and/or a custodial sentence. Again, Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court, including legal costs.

Money raised from fines is only used by the local authority to cover the costs of administering the system, and to fund attendance support. Any extra money is returned to the government.
