Dear parents, carers and families,

Welcome to Our Final Newsletter of the Academic Year

As we reach the end of another incredible academic year, it feels like the perfect moment to reflect on what has been the most fabulous few weeks at Nancealverne. Our calendar has been packed with celebrations, achievements and unforgettable moments, bringing our school community together in the best possible way.

Our Secondary School Prom, held in the Main Hall, was a wonderful celebration, with students from Years 7 to 14 enjoying an evening filled with fantastic dancing, a delicious buffet and plenty of photographs to capture the memories. It was heartwarming to see everyone celebrating the end of another successful year together.

The Summer Fayre was another outstanding event. The creativity and enterprise shown through the brilliant stalls and produce made by our students and staff were truly inspiring. The atmosphere was made even more special by the beautiful music from our soulful choir and the wonderful Zoe, whose performances of classic songs delighted everyone who attended.

Our Upper School Prom at the Hockey Club was a tremendous success. The food prepared by our students was absolutely first class and showcased their incredible skills. We are immensely grateful to the Hockey Club for their generosity, kindness and warm hospitality, which helped create such a special evening. With dancing, games and laughter throughout the night, our students had the opportunity to celebrate together, feeling wonderfully grown up as they created lasting memories with their friends.

One of the most moving occasions of the year was our Leavers’ Performance and Presentation at the Zennor Auditorium, Penwith. It provided a fitting final stage to celebrate the remarkable progress, achievements and journeys of our young people. There were moments of laughter, proud applause, shared memories and, undoubtedly, a few tears as we said goodbye to our leavers and wished them every success for the future.

Over these final two days of term, we take time to reflect on just how far every student has come this year, helping them prepare for the summer ahead and the exciting opportunities that await them when they return for the next stage of their journey at Nancealverne.

None of this would be possible without our exceptional staff. Thank you for your skill, compassion, dedication and unwavering commitment to understanding every student’s individual needs and helping them achieve success. We are also deeply grateful to our families, whose support, trust and partnership have helped us build the strongest and most connected school community we have ever had.

We hope you all enjoy a well-deserved, restful and joyful summer. Thank you for being part of another truly memorable year. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in September, refreshed and ready for another exciting chapter.

Skills Builder Gold Award:

We are thrilled to be awarded our 'Skills Builder Gold Award' for another year! The Skills Builder Gold Award recognises that Nancealverne has embedded the teaching of essential skills through its curriculum and wider offer. The Skills Builder Framework helps learners develop essential skills such as listening, speaking, problem-solving, creativity, staying positive, aiming high, leadership, and teamwork.  The award is given to institutions that model best practice in high-quality essential skills education, integrating these skills fully into daily teaching and learning practices. We are delighted to retain the award for another year.

Apples Class: 

Apples Class have had a busy and exciting half-term! We've been keeping cool during the hot weather with lots of fun water play, which everyone has thoroughly enjoyed.

One of the highlights of the term was our fantastic trip to Newquay Zoo, where we loved seeing all the amazing animals and learning about their habitats.

We've also really enjoyed our Moving to Learn sessions, which have helped us stay active while developing new skills. Alongside all of this, we've been busy taking part in lots of exciting learning activities each day!

Olives Class:

Olive’s Class have had a lot of fun this term. As part of our phonics activities, we have been learning about the letter ‘X’ and exploring different sounds by playing the xylophones. The children have also had a fantastic time during rebound therapy, enjoying movement and bouncing on the trampoline. Our sporting adventures didn’t end there, as we had an amazing time at sports day, especially during the sensory race!

In preparation for the summer fair, the girls really enjoyed sorting the sweets into bags. We were amazed that all the sweets on our stall sold out in just 15 minutes!

Olive’s Class wish everyone cooler days and a relaxing summer!

Sycamore Class: 

Chestnuts and Sycamore went to Paradise Park. Sycamore class had a fantastic time and the staff are so proud of how they adapted to different surroundings. Their behaviour was amazing. We looked at lots of different birds and animals. Our favourites were the flamingos,  the penguins, the otters and the fish. We also went to the huge soft play area, sharing the equipment with our friends and taking turns to go down the massive bumpy slide. So brave! 

Well done Sycamore class.

Chestnuts Class: 

Chestnuts Class have had a busy and exciting half term, filled with lots of fun activities alongside all of our hard work in class.

The highlight of the term was our recent trip to Paradise Park. We had a fantastic day exploring the park, seeing a variety of animals, watching them being fed, and learning lots of interesting facts. The children also enjoyed spending time in the playground before finishing the day with the exciting dinosaur show.

It was a wonderful trip, and the children were a real credit to the school. They behaved beautifully, showed great enthusiasm for learning, and made us all incredibly proud. Well done, Chestnuts!

Palm Class: 

We held a Mario kart tournament in class for a mental health and wellbeing day. It was great to see the children sharing and taking turns. Everyone was very patient and kind with a small hint of friendly rivalry.

Juniper Class: 

Juniper class has been inspired by the recent hot weather and has been exploring bubbles outside in the sun, designing swimwear and rating our favourite ice creams to put in a pictogram in maths!

Willows Class: 

As part of our Wellbeing Afternoon, Willows Class was delighted to host a sensory story for everyone to enjoy.

The students had a wonderful time listening to the story while exploring a variety of sensory experiences. It was lovely to see everyone engaging with the different sights, sounds, textures, and activities, making the story come to life in a fun and interactive way.

A big thank you to everyone who came along and joined us. We hope you enjoyed sharing this special experience with us!

Sports Day:

Third time lucky! After two earlier attempts, the sun finally came out just in time for our Sports Days, and what a fantastic couple of days they were!

Our students were amazing and gave every activity their very best. There were lots of smiles as everyone enjoyed taking part in races, teamwork challenges, and sensory activities. It was wonderful to see so much encouragement, determination, and fun throughout the day.

A huge thank you to the fantastic students from Humphry Davy School, who joined us to support our Sports Days in both the morning and afternoon. Their kindness, enthusiasm, and encouragement made a real difference, and our students loved having them there.

Finally, a very special thank you to Hannah for organising such a brilliant event. Her hard work and careful planning made sure everyone had a wonderful time.

Well done to all of our amazing students—we are so proud of you all!

Thursday 3rd September: Student's first day back for the new term.

If your child is absent from school without authorisation, you will be committing an offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £80 if paid within 21 days or £160 if paid after this but within 28 days.

If your child is further absent from school without authorisation within any 3-year period, you will be committing a further offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices for a second offence are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £160, payable within 28 days.

Importantly, fines per parent will be capped to two fines within any three-year period. Once this limit has been reached, other action such as a parenting order or prosecution will be considered. 

Failure to pay the Penalty Notice may also result in legal action. If you are prosecuted and attend court because your child has not been attending school, you could get a fine of up to £2,500. Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court, including legal costs.

 Absence not authorised by the school may also result in a prosecution in the Magistrates’ Court under Section 444(1) or Section 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996, leading to a fine of up to £2,500 and/or a custodial sentence. Again, Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court, including legal costs.

Money raised from fines is only used by the local authority to cover the costs of administering the system, and to fund attendance support. Any extra money is returned to the government.
