ISSUE 020

Dear Parents and Carers,

What an exciting week at Nancealverne with more regular sunshine than we have had in a while!

We have lots to share with you in the newsletter this week including our new Skills Builder focus for May, further SEN soft play sessions and a summary of Evergreens trip to Pirates rugby! What a great way to spend the weekend.

Just a reminder that Monday the 6th of May is a bank holiday so school will be closed. We will re-open on the 7th of May.

Have a lovely long weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.

Warm Regards,

Lauren Ladd

Skills Builder at Nancealverne School

As a gold award skills builder school, we know how important embedding these skills for life are for our students.

There are 8 skills to accomplish, and we have decided to have a focus of at least 1 per month. Our skills builder focus this month is 'Aiming High'.

Any opportunity in the classroom, in school or at home to celebrate moments of 'Aiming high' will occur in May.

Upper and Lower Evergreens were kindly invited by The Cornish Pirates to attend one of their matches against Cambridge.

Our day began by meeting Neil and Lee from The Pirates who met us at the Front Gate and gave out the tickets.

We made our way into the stadium and were directed to our own seating area.

After a little while we took lots of great pictures of the group looking forward to the match starting.

We were also excited to meet the mascot ‘Captain Benbow’ and take pictures with him.

Just before the match started we were honoured to be asked to perform a ‘Guard of Honour’ for the players by standing on the pitch and waving our flags as they ran past.

Once the players were on then pitch we made our way back to the grand stand to take our seats.

Pirates started off not doing very well and were behind in the first half.

In the second half The Pirates played quite brilliantly to score lots of tries and win the match.

During the second half we all got very excited and when The Pirates scored a ‘try’ we waved our signs to show our support.

The Pirates were victorious 45-18.

On the game finishing the players kindly came over to us and gave their autographs and took pictures with the students.

The players made us feel very welcome and asked if we had enjoyed the game.

We would like to thank the Pirates for inviting us to watch the match.

We would definitely want to cheer them on in the future.

The entitlement criteria for automatic payments from the Household Support Fund is changing.

In order to be entitled to a payment from the Household Support Fund scheme in 2024, you must be responsible for at least one child and on 3rd June 2024 either:

  • be entitled to Council Tax Support or
  • have been placed in emergency accommodation by the Council

You will receive £80 per child. If you are already in receipt of Council Tax Support, then you don’t have to do anything else – you will receive your payment automatically.

To find out if you are eligible for Council Tax Support, please check the information here https://www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators .

You can make a claim for Council Tax Support by using this link https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/benefits-and-support/council-tax-support/apply-for-council-tax-support/
It is important that you submit your application by 31st May 2024.

You may also be entitled to help from the Household Support Fund via one of the Household Support Fund partners. Their details can be found here https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/benefits-and-support/household-support-fund/

Why have we made this change?

Because entitlement to Free school meals has been protected since 2018, parents of children who are entitled to free school meals aren’t always still on a low income. By using our Council Tax Support data, we can ensure that the Household Support Fund awards are going to parents who currently have a low income and are struggling with the increased costs of running their home. By better targeting the awards, we are able to help families with children of any age, rather than just school age children.

Families of children in receipt of free school meals can still access help through the Time2Move holiday programme. This scheme offers fun physical activities, games and wider activities plus a meal for all children during the main school holiday periods.
