Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year! I hope that you have had a wonderful Christmas.

The children have returned to school so positively this week and it was lovely to see so many smiles on the first morning back! We are looking forward to the Spring term ahead and have lots to look forward to. We are in the process of planning many opportunities/events for parents to be able to visit the school and have already set the date for the coffee morning on 24th January.

At Nancealverne School, we are always looking for ways to improve the school environment and facilities for the pupils. Over the Christmas period, we have further enhanced our playground with a significant extension to this area. This extension is fantastic and will have a significant impact on our outdoor learning and PE offer-the additional space will provide us with greater opportunities for learning, play and physical exercise on the school site.

We have also been busy creating further spaces in the school for therapeutic interventions. The new Specialist Intervention Team enhances our current therapy offer with increased capacity for: Occupational therapy, Speech and Language interventions and physiotherapy. Our newly appointed Intervention Coordinator is Sue Wilkinson-some of you may already know Sue or met her during the most recent parents’ evening. The specialist Intervention team are already making such an impact on the school.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your continued support and look forward to an exciting 2023 at Nancealverne.

Best wishes,

Ruth Carpenter

The students and staff have been getting back into the swing of school this week with a number of activities and visits.

Earlier this week Maple class headed out for a wheelie walk to listen out for environmental phonic sounds on their way around Penzance.

On Wednesday, 6th Form had the opportunity to meet members of the community engagement and road side collection recycling teams from Biffa!

We enjoyed a presentation with the theme of 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle', where we found out about how much waste we produce, what changes we can make, and which bins to use for different types of waste materials. 6th Form students asked some excellent questions to find out more about the job roles and responsibilities at Biffa in connection with Cornwall Council.

Following the presentation, students had the chance to explore the recycling truck, find out what processes happen to contain all the waste materials and even got to sit in the cab!

A very interesting and interactive experience was had by all!

Lower 6th Form have been learning about Louis Braille and how he created a way to make letters tactile. The students tried to read the 'black book of colours' in braille to experience how skilled one needs to be to read braille. We then used different resources to spell our name and write messages to each other.

We are so excited to have a new school liaison team at Nancealverne. Please see the letter sent home and on the website.

Our new school liaison team are holding our first coffee morning of the year on the 24th of January. We'd love you to join us for tea, coffee and biscuits between 10.30am and 11.30am. This is an opportunity to meet Lauren and Stephanie as well as hearing some key information about the support available at school and to meet other parents and carers.

We'd appreciate it if you could let us know if you are attending (so we can  buy enough biscuits!) and if you have any dietary requirements. Please email Lauren on: lladd@nancelaverne.org.uk or call the office.

If you can't make it this time don't panic - these are going to be a regular event from now on!
