Autism Champion & Autism Resources

Tash Stone

Home School Liaison and Autism Champion

Prior to working at Nancealverne Tash worked as a TA for a child with Autism in a mainstream school, she worked closely alongside a PECS consultant to support the child's developing communication and had valuable experience in using PECS. After that Tash was the Early Years Autism Worker for the locality, for 7 years she provided training, support and guidance to parents/carers, nurseries and schools to support the implementation of Autism strategies within the settings.

Autism Friendly School Status

The Autism Champion is an initiative introduced to Cornwall by the Autism Spectrum Team in 2013. A member of staff with an interest and experience in working with pupils with autism is designated to be the Autism Champion by their school.  Part of their role is to assess the  strengths and needs of students, so that they can provide guidance and strategies, that means that small issues are dealt with before they become major concerns.

They act as an in- school resource to the staff working with them and in some cases to work directly with the young people.  They promote autism awareness within their schools.  The impact of Autism Champions was positively evaluated by pupils, parents, staff and senior managers in a study carried out in 2015.

In October 2020 we have been awarded the Autism friendly Schools status by Cornwall Council, we have worked closely with the Autism Team to evidence our practice across the school. We are the first special school in Cornwall to receive this status.
