Class 5 is a mixed age class (KS2 to post 16). We support young people who may need a more sensory and ‘small steps’ approach to learning. We also offer a safe and supportive environment for young people who have more complex learning and care needs. Our young people spend time in Class 5 and with in their peer groups though out school.
A supportive team made up of a class teacher and four teaching assistants provides our eight young people a safe and fun place to learn. Our team is fully trained to support our young people with all areas of development and care, including medical and therapy needs.
Class 5 offers a total communication environment to support pupil’s development, understanding, and awareness of their world. We provide a wide range of experiences and opportunities to support learning. This includes; intensive interaction, sensory effects, Tacpac (Total approach to communication), cause and effect activities, use of objects of reference/symbols/pictures/makaton, on the body signing, massage therapy, music therapy, and access to the sensory room, dark room, pottery, and hydrotherapy. Through this wide range of teaching aids and approaches we are able to provide true experiential learning tailored to each of our pupils specific needs, enabling them to enhance their learning opportunities and long term life choices.
To support the total pupils needs the, the School nurse, the therapy team (Physio/Occupational/Speech and Language Therapists) along with outside agencies (inc. vision, hearing, dietetic support services) work with us to provide a truly holistic learning environment. We also work closely with the School Nurse.
Class 5 follow a three year cycle of planning, which consists of nine topic stories that create nine multisensory environmental projects. Each topic story is explored for a term, and the planning incorporates weekly subject focusses to enhance learning. English and Maths are worked on throughout the term across all the subject areas.
The nine topic stories are as follows:
- Under the ground
- In the sea
- Up in the air
- Home and me
